Uninterrupted time to focus on something you love can be hard to come by, and yet tremendously satisfying. In fact, that's a big part of the reason for Slalom's sabbatical program: to give consultants time to pursue their passions.
Drake Christensen, a Chicago-based consultant, put his sabbatical to that very purpose when he took a two-week boatbuilding course at the WoodenBoat School, located in the coastal town of Brooklin, Maine.
There he and nine classmates worked to build a replica of an elegant 17-foot day-sailer called the Coquina, designed in 1889 by renowned naval architect Nathanael Herreshoff.
In addition to work on the replica, after time in the shop, Drake said he was able to unwind sailing one of the fleet of small boats built and maintained by the school.
The rest of his time off Drake spent with "the greatest family ever," swimming, eating ice cream, selling lemonade – "classic summer fun," he recalled. Although, he also got to work on his own boat project at home, which finished later that summer.
