Sabbatical - Greg Martin

It was all about connecting with family during an amazing trip spanning multiple foreign cities for Greg Martin’s second sabbatical.

Greg, a Seattle-based consultant, and his brother wanted to treat their father to an unforgettable 60th birthday. Since their dad had never been outside the U.S. other than to visit Canada and Mexico, Greg and his brother decided it was time for him to experience Europe. Greg’s father was under the impression that he was too old to travel and had missed his opportunity. Greg and his brother thought otherwise, and told him to pack his bags.

By the time the actual trip arrived–having had a year to get use to the idea–Greg’s father was very excited to go. The group decided to ‘do it old school’ by backpacking across Europe with very little planning, except for their flights into Dublin and out of Rome two weeks later.

“The trip was great,” Greg states, “We had a whirlwind European tour. We would decide on our next city and book our hotels one step at a time, and we did a ton of walking, eating, and drinking across Europe.”

Having been to Europe before, Greg was able to act as tour guide for his brother and father as they traveled to Dublin, London, Amsterdam, Munich, Florence, and finally Rome. The most memorable moment was when the trio partied in Dublin with the locals the night of a big rugby championship.
