Creating access to opportunities
Dedicated to helping urban youth reach their full potential, Year Up connects young adults who are highly motivated but lack stable career opportunities with the training and experience to start professional careers in business and IT.
During the first six months of the program, participants receive training and coaching in business fundamentals and marketable IT skills. In the second six months, participants apply this knowledge as interns with Year Up partner companies. Participants graduate from Year Up with college credit and expanded career horizons.
Slalom’s first Year Up intern, Imani Taylor, made an instant impact on the IT Support team thanks to a winning combination of Year Up training and his passion for technology.
“Imani’s time here has been fast-paced and his performance has been outstanding. Above all, Imani’s positive attitude and friendly smile has made him a favorite with many of our employees. Imani applied to Year Up because he was eager to build upon the technical education he received in school, but wasn’t sure where he wanted to go next with his interests. Year Up helped change that.
“Year Up prepared Imani extremely well to succeed at Slalom – both in terms of technical fundamentals and the intangibles,” says Ewan Hruska, Slalom’s IT Services Manager. “His professionalism and ability to learn new technologies is equivalent to that of a lot of technicians with two or three years of experience. I am so confident in Imani’s abilities that I would recommend him for specific and appropriate external client projects.”

Not only did the Year Up program help Imani get a foot in the door professionally, but it also helped him realize he specifically wants to work in information technology.
