Why I’m still with Slalom after 10 years

In honor of Slalom Seattle’s 15th anniversary, one employee reflects on why she joined Slalom 10 years ago—and why she’s still here today.

It was a Wednesday afternoon in 2005 when I got the call. A friend and former co-worker was calling to tell me about his new job. He was working for a small consulting firm where, supposedly, there was absolutely “no travel.”

“Consulting without travel?”

I’d been in consulting long enough to know that travel was part of the game. Peanut butter and jelly. Seattle and coffee. Consulting and travel.

But I let him continue…

“Joining Slalom was like becoming a member of a family. A family that’s deeply invested in each other’s growth and lives by its values.”

He explained that the company was what we had always looked for. Fresh, innovative, and flexible, with smart people driven to succeed. He told me the company wanted to build a team that would directly contribute to the company’s growth and evolution—a place where people and their ideas truly matter. A place where egos get checked at the door.

Less than a month after that phone call, I joined 2Degrees Consulting—now Slalom. And I’ve never looked back.

Joining Slalom was like becoming a member of a family. A family that’s deeply invested in each other’s growth and lives by its values.

While Slalom has more than tripled in size since I joined, the heart of the organization remains true. People are still what make this company great. The members of the Slalom family are the fiber of its culture and what keeps the company growing in the right direction.

We genuinely like one another, work as a team to make the company great, and take pride in that greatness. As a company, Slalom respects its employees. Our leaders are open to innovation, new ideas, feedback, and—most important—to change.

Like all firms (and families), the last 10 years have had their ups and downs. And while the downs have taught us the lessons needed to help us be better servant leaders, it's the quality of the ups that keep us invested and dedicated to this family.

Congratulations, Slalom, on 15 amazing years. It’s been quite a ride. I’m honored to be a part of the Slalom family and look forward to the next chapter in our story.
