Delivering better medical care through better data
When Advocate Health Care wanted to improve its order entry rates, we helped empower its teams to see the opportunities and fix them.
Electronic medical records reduce error, save costs, and standardize care—but they need to be submitted properly. Advocate Health Care wanted to improve its computerized order-entry rates, and recognized that it needed to get a better understanding of the reasons behind its current rates.
Together, we turned to Tableau Software’s powerful data visualizations. We found that visual and interactive operational reporting gave Advocate’s hospitals and care centers better insight into their data. And better insight ultimately means better patient care.
Order entry 101
Doctors and providers use orders to tell hospital staff to administer care for a patient, such as instructions to run a lab test, conduct an X-ray, give a medication, or turn a patient every two hours. Orders that used to be manually dictated on paper charts are now directly entered electronically by licensed providers—this process is referred to as CPOE, or computerized provider order entry.

Goal: Healthier CPOE compliance
Advocate wanted to turn around its lower-than-expected activity in CPOE, and partnered with us to create an improvement strategy. After a data analysis deep-dive, we found unexpected results: error-prone processes had been created that reduced compliance, revenue capture, and safety. We set out to share this data with hospital leadership, so they could correct behaviors and improve processes.
Equipped to analyze, react, and improve
Better visibility and greater access to data allows hospitals to analyze, react, and improve. So the team's goal was simple: deliver a self-service business intelligence (BI) tool that would visualize “order data.” As a result, staff at each of Advocate’s hospitals would have the tools required to find, investigate, and correct processes that were impacting compliance and safety at their locations.
We helped integrate a complex data set into a SQL Server solution; designed and developed interactive, user-friendly visual dashboards using Tableau software; and facilitated user adoption through site-by-site training sessions.
Hospital staff were amazed by the tool’s ease of use and the flexibility of reporting and data manipulation made possible by interacting with the Tableau dashboards. More importantly, the data was eye-opening: visibility into the nooks and crannies of the data provided the staff with the information they needed to make positive changes that led to the incremental growth of CPOE compliance while contributing to their ultimate goal: better patient safety and care.
