Slalom announces joint offering with AWS to accelerate mainframe modernization

Offering provides joint customers with end-to-end process, technology, and organizational guidance for retiring mainframe monoliths and driving business outcomes

Seattle, WA — November 22, 2022 — Today, Slalom, a global business and technology consulting company, announced a new joint offering with Amazon Web Services (AWS), to accelerate the migration of customers’ mainframe architectures to the cloud. This offering combines proven methodologies, tools, and approaches from Slalom and AWS to tackle customers’ challenges with mainframe modernization more holistically than traditional approaches. The joint capability will combine Slalom consulting services with AWS Mainframe Modernization. Instead of migrating individual mainframe components to the cloud using platform emulation—an approach known as “at parity”—Slalom and AWS focus first on working backwards with customers starting from their desired business outcomes.

“For more than a decade, we’ve worked with AWS and supported the company’s vision, building a slate of incredible tools for our customers who are moving to AWS and modernizing there,” said Mike Cowden, executive president of global technologies at Slalom. “The next step is to innovate and help organizations optimize their core business systems with stable, cloud-supported mainframe backbones that are more efficient to run.”

Too often, an “at-parity” approach to mainframe migration only transfers the complexity of on-premises mainframes to the cloud, keeping the business from transforming. Using the global footprint and combined strengths of AWS and Slalom, this new offering helps to remove the constraints of traditional mainframe technology and give customers the ability to quickly, predictably, and cost-effectively accelerate modernization. Slalom and AWS have a history of customer success helping customers modernize their mainframes, and our work with LoyaltyOne serves as an example.

"Strategically, we made the decision to completely change the course of what we were doing from a technology perspective and rethought, redesigned, and re-architected the Airmiles loyalty platform from a monolithic mainframe system to a cloud-native, API-enabled micro service on AWS,” said Harry Yu, director of enterprise architecture at LoyaltyOne. “Slalom partnered with us on what, I would say, is the biggest technology implementation we've ever done in LoyaltyOne’s 30 years of history, and it was as close to perfect as anyone could ever expect it to be."

Consisting of a set of managed tools, AWS Mainframe Modernization provides infrastructure and software for migrating, modernizing, and running mainframe applications. Together with Slalom’s fiercely human approach to consulting, the companies will help customers achieve their innovation goals and build cross-functional alignment among business and technology teams.

“Enterprises of all sizes are looking to outpace their competitors using technology,” said Bill Platt, general manager of Migration Services at AWS. “To help our customers become modern technology companies, AWS has invested in solutions for balancing businesses aspirations against the legacy limitations of mainframes.”
